Task 3: You are a judge. Decide how long the accused should be sent to prison for. The minimum is three month, the maximum is life imprisonment. You can also acquit. Give your reasons and arguments.
Case 1. The accused is a doctor. He gave an overdose to an 85-year old painter who had malignant tumour. He swore it was euthanasia as he had done it at the patient’s request. But now the painter’s family accuses the doctor of murder.
Though the doctor asserts that he did euthanasiaat the patient’s request he is charged in a euthanasia-murder case. The doctor will be found guilty because euthanasia is illegal in Russia. According to Article 105 of the Criminal Code of Russia homicide is punished by imprisonment for the period from 6 to 15 years. It’s the matter of the doctor and his advocate to prove the patient’s consent of ending his life. Then this case can be classified as justifiable homicide. It means that the doctor committed a murder on compassionate grounds. He wanted to relieve the terminally ill man of pain and suffering. The punishment should fit the crime. The accused should be sentenced to imprisonment for the minimum period of six years.

1. My family is very united and when we get together we are happy. In the evening we usually have tea together and discuss the events of the day. Also we like watching TV, especially films. Sometimes we go for a walk or ride bikes. My parents are theatre-goers and they often invite us to go to the theatre. At week-ends we do not stay at home, we go to the country. We have a good time there. I am glad to have such a family.

1. I am very proud of my city, because it is one of the most beautiful Siberian cities. It is situated on the mighty river Yenisey. There are many wide streets, modern buildings and interesting places in it. Our city is famous for its wonderful fountains. We admire the city in summer when there are many colourful flowers in the streets and squares. Besides, our city is old and there are many historic sights to see. And of course, we are proud of our reserve “Stolby” which is known all over the world.
2. My city is famous for its Siberian hospitality and that’s why many guests come to see Krasnoyarsk. They can go to many interesting places such as the embankment of the river Yenisey, the reserve Stolby, the monuments to Resanov and Dubensky and others. Krasnoyarsk is a cultural centre as there are many cinemas and theatres, art galleries and museums in it. Many outstanding people lived and worked in our city among them Surikov, the greatest artist, Khvorostovsky, the world-known opera singer, twice Olympic champion Ivan Yarigin and others are. The guests of Krasnoyarsk can admire the beauty of our green city and its outskirts. They can taste our traditional dish “Siberian pelmeny” in many cafes and restaurants. We are always glad to meet the guests of our city.

1. I made a final decision to be a lawyer, because I find this subject to be very interesting. This profession is onе of the mоst popular professions among the young people of our country. А graduate from the law faculty or law institute mау choose his place of work and occupation from a number of possible ones. 2. I have always been interested in law and that’s why I made a final decision to be a lawyer.The profession of a lawyer is of great need and very popular in our country. Its main task is to administer justice and serve the people. The main objective is to protect the rights and legal interests of Russia's citizens. The duty of the lawyer is not only to punish people for various crimes but he must do their best to prevent crimes. That is why a lawyermust bevery competent in law. Besides, I guess, this work requires much courage and determination for lawyers fight negative phenomena in the society.
Studying to be a lawyer represents the fulfilment of one of my longest held dreams. I am sure this job will give me a great satisfaction.
