Meet the people who make flying possible
(A Dialogue)
The practice instructor (PI) has invited pupils V, E, P and N to discuss their future jobs.
PI: Today I am going to show you how airplanes are prepared for flight and what ground personnel is doing. I’ll also answer all your questions about aviation.
N: My brother is a civil aviation pilot. He sometimes tells us about accidents. Is it really dangerous to fly a modern jet liner?
PI: It is no more dangerous than walking in the street. But the ground crew must prepare the airplane very thoroughly.
V: Does these personnel actually repair the plane?
PI: The ground crew usually do only minor repairs. Their main duty is to keep the plane trimmed and ready for flight.
P: But who does major repairs?
PI: Major repairs and overhauls are done by technicians and engineers in the overhaul hangar. Sometimes flight accidents happen on the ground. At night a big widebody liner veered off the slippery runway and the landing gear latch and the wheel were badly damaged. The ground crew had changed the whole uplatch and the wheel by the morning. All delays of a scheduled liner cost a lot of money.
N: (in the overhaul hangar) It’s so noisy in here! I just wonder what are these two boys doing?
PI: They are sheet-metal workers riveting a wing tip. As I see it they have just put in the last rib and are now drilling holes in the metal with a pneumatic drill. But the noise is produced by riveting, not by drilling.
V: Are there less noisier ways of joining structural elements?
PI: There are other ways, such as bolting, glueing and welding.
P: But most aviation metals will not weld!
PI: Most aviation metals are perfectly weldable due to melding technique. And now let’s come over to this set-up and ask the electrician.
N: Are you repairing an electrical system?
E: Yes, in a way. I am making a modification to the wiring here.
N: What kind of modification?
E: I’ll have to change the pot, the relay and adjust the voltage regulators afterwards.
P: What type of welding are you using?
E: It depends on the type of connection. Sometimes it’s electron beam welding, sometimes plain soldering.
PI: Thank you. (Addressing the pupils): We’ve had just a glimpse of some shops. Of course there are many others, such as the machine shop, the paint shop, the test shop, and so on. But I am afraid our time is up.
