Aviation- Highway to the Future
1. The history of flight is the history of a dream to soar through the sky like a bird. In 1680 Borelli described bird flight. It was just a short leap of imagination to envision a larger version of these flying objects with a person aboard. And imagination was no short supply constructed and tested a wide variety of flying machines. In 1903, Orville Wright achieved the first piloted, sustained, controlled and powered flight. His brother, Wilbur Wright, stood by and timed the flight with a stopwatch. The first flight lasted twelve seconds and the aircraft flew 100 yards. They made three more flights that day and the longest was nearly a minute and covered more than half a mile. The Wright Brothers were the first to treat a flying machine and the first to build a total flying machine.
2. Aviation completely changed and the world became a global village. Now it provides the fastest transportation link between different population centers. In many places the airplane is the only known vehicle for the large-scale movement of passengers and freight over large distances. As for the helicopter, this type of aircraft is invaluable for vertical or near vertical take-off landing and vertical load lifting. Crossing the world is as easy as (sometimes easier than) getting from one sider of a city to another. The world of air travel developed into a huge industry. There are a lot of airports in the world. But probably one of the greatest of them all is London’s Heathrow, which tops the list of both international flights and international passengers.
3. The expansion of civil aviation will reflect an immense growth in the worldwide business traveling, cargo transportation and tourism. Supersonic transport will be economically competitive with subsonic transports. Short takeoff and landing aircraft will dominate the short-haul air routes up to 600 miles. There are no doubts about the continuing importance of aviation and the dynamic nature of its development in succeeding years.
