Different approaches to the definition of “Management”
It should be mentioned that “management” has as many definitions as there are managers. So it is possible to outline different approaches to the definition of “management”.
Many people consider it to be an art of how to motivate people to give off their best. Others think that management is a science. In practice business management is the art and science of getting things done through other people. So, management in all business and organizational activities is the act of getting people together to accomplish desired goals and objectives using available resources efficiently and effectively.
Management is often included as a factor of production together with machines, materials, and money. According to Peter Drucker, the basic task of management is twofold: marketing and innovation. He also says that “most of what we call management consists of making it difficult for people to get their work done”. Stephen Covey supposes that “management is efficiency in climbing the ladder of success; leadership determines whether the ladder is leaning against the right wall”.
As a discipline management consists of functions of formulating corporate policy and organizing, planning, coordinating, controlling, and directing organization’s resources to achieve the company’s objectives. All these functions are interdependent and interrelated.
Management can be described as the process of making decisions which involves risk and uncertainty. It’s up to a manager to decide what decision to make and it’s risky because he will be responsible for making this decision.
We can also say that management is a group of people – directors and managers who have the power and responsibility to makedecisions to manage an enterprise.
