The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northen Ireland consists of four parts: England, Scotland, Wales and Northen Ireland. It is one of the smallest countries in the world. The territory of the UK is about 244.000 square kilometers. The population of the United Kingdom is over 57 million people. The largest cities of Britain are London, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester, Edinburgh, Birmingham. English is the official language. But it is not the only language which people use in the UK.
The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy. The Queen is the head of the state. The British Parliament consists of two chambers: the House of Lords and the House of Commons. The House of Commons plays the major role in law – making. Parliamentary elections must be held every five years. The Parliament and the Queen have different roles in the development of the country.
The capital of the UK is London. It is one of the largest cities in the world. London is situated on the river Thames. It is a big port and a commercial, manufacturing and cultural centre. Traditionally it is divided into several parts: the City, Westminster, the West End and the East End. The City is the oldest part of London, its financial and business centre. Westminster is the aristocratic official part of London. It includes Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament. The West End is the richest and most beautiful part of London. The East End is an industrial district of London. There are many factories and the Port of London there.
The UK is a highly developed industrial country. It is known as one of the world’s largest producers and exporters of machinery, electronics, textile, aircraft and navigation equipment. One of the chief industries of the country is shipbuilding.
